Stress, Cortisol and Drive: The Connection Men Miss

Cortisol and testosterone pull against each other. One human trial measured both in the same men — here is what it found, and what actually lowers the load.

Men look for the cause of flat drive in the obvious places. Age. Training. Diet. The one that gets overlooked is the one that has been running in the background for two years without a break.

Two hormones, opposite directions

Cortisol is not the villain. It is the hormone that gets you out of bed, sharpens you under pressure and handles genuine emergencies. Short bursts are exactly what it is for.

The problem is when the burst never ends. A stress response designed for minutes gets held open for months by deadlines, money, poor sleep and a phone that never stops.

Cortisol and testosterone tend to move in opposite directions. When one is chronically elevated, the other is working uphill.

The trial that measured both

Sixty-three adults screened for moderate stress took either 200 mg of a standardized Tongkat Ali root extract or a placebo daily for four weeks, with salivary hormone measures taken throughout.

Against placebo:

  • Cortisol was 16% lower*
  • Testosterone was at 137% of the placebo group*
  • Tension, anger and confusion scores all improved*

Talbott SM, et al. Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, 2013.

Both hormones moving favourably in the same population, in the same four weeks, is a more coherent result than either figure on its own.

The usual disclosure applies, and it matters: that trial used 200 mg of a standardized extract. TESTO PLUS contains 500 mg of root powder. More milligrams, different material. The research tells you about the botanical, not about this bottle.

The word “adaptogen,” defined properly

An adaptogen is a plant traditionally used to help the body cope with stress load rather than to stimulate or sedate it. Three are in the TESTO PLUS formula: Eleuthero from Siberia, Astragalus 4:1 from traditional Chinese medicine, and Panax Ginseng from Korea.*

They sit in the energy and stamina pillars, which together account for 39% of the 2,273 mg serving.

Four things that lower the load, none of which cost anything

  1. Protect the last hour before bed. Screens and stimulation late keep the system switched on when it should be powering down.
  2. Train, but do not only train hard. Chronic high-intensity work with no easy days adds to the load instead of discharging it.
  3. Get daylight early. Morning light anchors the daily cortisol rhythm to when it is actually useful.
  4. Take the recovery week. Most men will deload their training before they deload their calendar. The calendar is usually the bigger problem.

The order of operations

Fix the input before topping up the output. Sleep, load and recovery move stress further than anything in a bottle.

A daily formula supports the system while you do that work.* It does not do the work for you — and any brand that tells you otherwise is selling you the easy half.

Quick answers

Does cortisol affect testosterone?

Cortisol and testosterone tend to move in opposite directions. When one is chronically elevated, the other is working uphill.

What is an adaptogen?

A plant traditionally used to help the body cope with stress load rather than to stimulate or sedate it. TESTO PLUS contains three: Eleuthero, Astragalus 4:1 and Panax Ginseng.*

What lowers stress load without a supplement?

Protecting the last hour before bed, not training hard every session, getting daylight early, and taking a recovery week.
